Herbie's Spices FAQ's

Whether you are interested in locating that perfect pepper blend, cumin or something more exotic, Herbie’s Spices is your one stop shop for all things flavour.

Below, you’ll find answers to some of Herbie's most frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between a Herb and a Spice?

The leaf of a plant used in cooking is known as a herb. Any other part of the plant, often dried, including buds (cloves), bark (cinnamon), roots (ginger), berries (peppercorns), aromatic seeds (cumin) or even the stigma of a flower (saffron) are all spices.

Are your spices gluten-free?

Gluten (in the form of wheat starch) is not added to any Herbie’s spices or spice blends. In the rare case when besan flour is added as an essential ingredient to a spice blend, it would be clearly marked on the ingredient list.

However, in some instances we cannot guarantee that products don’t contain traces of gluten, due to cross contamination during harvesting, transportation or processing. Some labels carry the statement “Contains gluten due to manufacturing practices” to highlight the presence of gluten.

Are your spices kosher and halal-certified?

No, we are not certified halal or kosher. Most spices are acceptable to both halal and kosher users and as we do not add any artificial ingredients of animal or seafood products to our spice blends, they should be acceptable as well. All products feature a detailed ingredient list for your reference.

How important is the nutritional information?

Under Australian food standards, it is mandatory to provide the nutritional data for all spice blends, as they contain a number of ingredients.

Although this mandate does not apply to individual herbs and spices, we have chosen to provide it for most of our herbs and spices when it is available. Should you see a Nutritional Information panel that does not mention something, say Carbohydrate, then it does not show as it is less than 0.1. You will notice that the amounts in most cases are shown in grams (g) per 100g.

Confusion with respect to sodium can be caused, as the standard for showing Sodium and Potassium, states that they are shown in milligrams (mg) which equal one thousandth of a gram. Therefore, sodium that shows as 1010 milligrams, is actually just 1.01 grams per 100 grams.

Do you have a book with detailed spice information?

Yes! We have a range of books packed full of recipes for you to try. Herbie's latest book – The Spice & Herb Bible 3rd Edition– is available now and features numerous herb and spices recipes collected from around the world.

How do I store my herbs and spices?

The pantry is a great place to store your packs of Herbie’s Spices. Just make sure they are not too close to any heat sources (fridge, oven or dishwasher).

After cutting the top of one of our high-barrier pouches and using some spice, squeeze out as much air as possible and zip the zip-seal closed. Expelling the air makes the spices last longer.
